Session 2 of the Fall 2020 International Student Orientation will take place on Wednesday, September 30th at 8:30 AM EST.

International Student Orientation is a virtual event that will introduce you to everything UMBC has to offer.  You will meet other new students, current international students, and UMBC staff from around campus who will be able to help you as you begin your career at UMBC and learn about the programs, services and opportunities available to you whether you are beginning your semester with us from inside or outside the U.S.

During Session 2, you will hear from:

  • IES Office: F-1 Immigration Rules
  • UMBC Career Center: Finding on campus and off campus work, career preparedness for international students
  • Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion and Belonging (I3B): Programs and services available to international students on campus, creating a community on campus
  • Graduate Student Association (GSA): Academic resources available for Graduate Students
  • Global Ambassadors: Opportunity to speak with current international students about their experiences at UMBC. Submit your questions here: Ask a Student! International Student Orientation – Session 2: September 30, 2020

 

Accessing Live Orientation Session on September 30th:

The live orientation session will take place via Webex.
The orientation will begin promptly at 8:30am EST. Please logon at this time.
You will not be able to join the event before the event start time

At 8:30 am EST on September 30th, to join the event, please use the following link. https://umbc.webex.com/umbc/onstage/g.php?MTID=e7bb659d1800f49010c6e921abda99db6

Once you click on the link a new tab will open for you to join. You may be requested to type in your name and email address (or this information might be prefilled for you).
The event password will already be entered for you, no need to change anything.

 

Once all boxes are filled in you have two options to join: It will be easier to join with Option 2
Option 1: Click “Join Now” button (will open up the Webex application for the event)
Option 2: Click on the words “Join by browser” (opens up event in a new tab).

 

 

Joining with Option 1: (If you already have the Webex Application installed)

After you entered your details, if you click the “Join Now” Button,  if previously installed, the Webex application will open.

At the bottom of the application window, you’ll see a green button that says “Join Event”

 

Once you click the join event button, a welcome slide (and/or the IES staff) will appear.

  • Please note it may take a few seconds to load and join the session. (You may also see a few pop ups about your camera and microphone)

Congratulations! You have joined the session! We look forward to meeting you on August 26th!

 

EASIER OPTION: Joining with Option 2: Joining with a web browser

After you entered your details, if you click the words “Join by browser” a new tab will open

In the new tab, you will be automatically connected to the event.

  • Please note It may take a few seconds to load and join the session. (You may also see a few pop ups about your camera and microphone)

Once you are connected to the event, a welcome slide (and/or the IES staff) will appear.

Accessing Orientation Prework Content:

You can still access all prework from Session 1 of International Student Orientation via Blackboard. To do so, please follow the instructions on how to access the prework platform and prework modules to complete.

How to Access International Student Orientation Content via Blackboard:

Follow the below steps to access the orientation platform:

  • Sign in to your myUMBC account here:
    • Have your UMBC email/username and password ready for this. See resources section at the bottom of the page  if you haven’t set up your UMBC username and password.
  • Once logged in, at the top of the page you will see the Blackboard icon on the top right of the screen. It looks like this:
  • Click the Blackboard icon and then click the open button.

  • Blackboard will open in a new tab
  • In Blackboard, on the left hand side of the screen, click on the section titled “Organizations”

  • In this section you will see “International Student Orientation”
  • Click “International Student Orientation” to access and view all content folders.

 

Orientation Prework:

Prior to the orientation scheduled on August 26, you need to complete all scheduled prework modules so you are prepared for the information that will be covered during the live session. This is also a great chance to review important information after orientation is complete.

 

Accessing Prework Content: 

Once on the International Student Orientation Page, you will see all the content has been organized into folders. You can expand each folder to see the content by clicking on the folder title or the down arrow on the right side of the folder

Once you have a folder open you can click on the title to open the content in each section. The content will open in a new browser tab.

Prework Assignment Schedule: 

Depending on if you are a new or transfer student, you should complete the following modules prior to orientation:

New Students please complete and review ALL content in the following folders:

  • Introduction to UMBC’s International Education Services Office
  • Safety, Scams, and Single Sign On
  • New F-1 Student Immigration Information
  • Cultural Content
  • Title IX Statement: Disclosures of Sexual Misconduct and Child Abuse

Transfer Students please complete and review ALL content in the following folders:

  • Introduction to UMBC’s International Education Services Office
  • Safety, Scams, and Single Sign On
  • Transfer F-1 Student Immigration Information
  • Cultural Content
  • Title IX Statement: Disclosures of Sexual Misconduct and Child Abuse

To be prepared for the information that will be covered in the live orientation sessions, complete and review all of the content in your assigned module (New or Transfer Student)
