Travel

  • In general, there is no change to F-1 travel rules.
  • Any international or domestic travel should be taken with caution, and after checking for any developments of travel restrictions for both the country/area being travelled to, and where you are travelling from.
  • Check for travel updates here:
    travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/COVID-19-Country-Specific-Information.html
  • Concerns to consider:
    • The area you are travelling to could experience an outbreak and implement a quarantine, and you would not be able to leave that area until the quarantine is lifted.
    • While you are travelling, there is an outbreak in the Baltimore area and travel restrictions are imposed on returning to the Baltimore area.
    • Consider health insurance coverage at your destination – will you have insurance coverage in case you are sick?
    • Are you able to be flexible in case your travel in either direction is delayed – in coursework you may be enrolled in, or work you may be doing?
    • Consider purchasing flights or other parts of travel, such as hotels, that has flexible cancellation. The extent to which different airlines or other companies are reimbursing purchases varies tremendously.

Leave of Absence

International students can take a semester off if necessary or desired as follows:

  • Remaining in the US while taking off:
  • Taking time off while outside of the US:
    • Students are welcome to take a semester off if desired, from outside of the US.  Please notify the IES Office of your plans.
      • Undergraduates can take one semester off and return without re-applying for admission.  IF taking more than one semester off, students would need to apply for readmission through the Undergraduate Admissions Office: undergraduate.umbc.edu/apply/readmission.php
      • Graduate students should speak directly with your department to understand your department’s policy on taking time off.
